What is SEO?

What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In a nutshell it means actions you take on your site to make it appear higher in search results. For example, if your business sells pens, then you will obviously want your website to be found when a person searches for “pens for sale.” The steps and actions you take to make your website appear as high as possible in the search results for “pens for sale” is search engine optimization, or SEO for short.

Why is SEO important?

Who doesn’t want their business to be found first for an important keyword? Who doesn’t want their business to appear higher in search results than their competitors? Who doesn’t want to have the best possible chance of someone visiting their website instead of someone else’s?

SEO is an integral aspect of having a website. We’re all familiar with the phrase “If you build it he will come” from the movie Field of Dreams, but that doesn’t play out in the real world. You can’t simply create a website and expect people to pour in by the masses. You must spend the time and resources to get the word out there about your website before people will begin to visit.

Think about it in terms of a brick and mortar store. If you open a store in an area that no one could accidentally stumble upon you, would you stay open for months hoping someone wanders in and purchases, or would you reach out to people and tell them where to find you? SEO is the same idea in a digital format. You want people to find you, and SEO is one piece of the puzzle to help them do that.

The Godfather’s Guide To Doing Business Online

By / December 12th, 2011 / Comments

Arguably, the Godfather movies are the greatest films ever made, begetting some great “wise guy” proverbs. And since I’m one of those guys who could communicate entirely in movie quotes and being a “web-wise guy” to boot, I wondered how Don Corleone might run the online “family business.” Here’s some memorable Godfather wisdom – and nobody even has to get whacked!

“I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse.” Studies show that it takes less than a second for visitors to pass judgment on you based on your website. Impress them immediately before the Back button becomes public enemy number one.

“It’s business, not personal.” If that’s your website’s vibe, remember: People make decisions intellectually, but they buy emotionally. It’s always personal; touch something sensitive.

If Dinosaurs Lived Today

By / December 8th, 2011 / Comments

Can you imagine living in a world filled with great and terrible beasts like the dinosaurs? What a world it must have been! I’m guessing that movies like Jurassic Park don’t even come close to depicting these awe-inspiring reptiles! If you’ve ever stood before the intimidating skeleton of a T-Rex in a museum, or a colossal Brachiosaurus, you might have gazed up at it wondering what that amazing animal must have been like in real life. You might have also wondered, Just how did such mighty creatures become extinct? You might be closer to the real answer than you think.

Eat Right & Keep Your Site From ‘Biggest Loser’ Status

By / November 30th, 2011 / Comments

I try to live my life on the healthier side. It’s funny; I’m convinced that we spend millions of dollars on fitness gimmicks only to discover time after time that the Holy Grail of healthy living is in fact… diet and exercise! Bummer. But doesn’t everything work that way? Aren’t we endlessly in search of that one secret ingredient promising us the fat-free, sugar-free, full-flavored business we’ve always wanted – one that makes customers descend on us like wave upon wave of demented dieters on a taco wagon? But alas, just when we were finally resigned to the painful truth that success is measured by how much good ol’ fashion work we were willing to put into it, along came the Internet, which changed everything!

You Do Realize Customer Service Begins With the Customer, Right?

You Do Realize Customer Service Begins With the Customer, Right?

I recently watched an episode of Gary Vaynerchuk’s Daily Grape and wanted to try one of the wines he reviewed. I went to a local wine shop and looked around, but had no luck finding it. When I asked the salesperson, she told me, and I quote, “Sorry dude, we don’t have that.” She then looked back down at the papers she had in her hand and walked away. She didn’t offer to help me find something similar. She didn’t ask about the wine I wanted to suggest something along the same lines. She didn’t even offer to order it for me. She did nothing and I was left to fend for myself in the middle of the store. Surrounded by wines I didn’t know and with no discernible direction to go, I left.

Is your website treating your customers the same way?

It may be and you may not even realize it.

You vs. The Competition

By / June 7th, 2011 / Comments

You vs. The CompetitionWho is your Competition? This seems like a fairly obvious question. Comcast or AT&T, Facebook or Twitter, Mac or PC. In the marketplace there is a constant battle to win over consumers. With all this competition being such a big part of our daily choices, I was surprised to find that when I ask clients to list their biggest competitors, they often have a hard time listing even one or two companies. The truth is that unless you have invented a brand new product, you probably have hundreds of competitors and you’re battling to gain attention every day.
